A Local butcher shop at 4159 West Broadway Since 1891

The History of Hackenmueller’s Meat Market

Hackenmueller’s Meat Market operates from one of the longest-running commercial storefronts in Robbinsdale. This local butcher shop at 4159 West Broadway traces back to 1891, when the meat market was purchased and operated under early ownership that helped establish it as a neighborhood staple.

Over the decades, the shop served as more than a place to buy meat, it was part of the rhythm of the community: familiar faces, trusted
quality, and a reputation built over generations.

The Urban and Hoffman Years (Late 1800s – 1960)

Historical accounts from the Robbinsdale Historical Society describe
the early era of the market and a major transition in the early 1920s.
In 1922, Kurt Hoffman Sr. and his brother Lewis Hoffman purchased the meat market, continuing operations at the same location and carrying the business forward as Robbinsdale grew.

A recent email from Kurt Hoffman’s grandson adds family detail to this
period: he recalls Kurt Hoffman Sr. buying the business from Gus Uban
in the mid-1920s, and the local butcher shop being run with family involvement
(including Kurt Jr. and Lewis). He also recalls the sale occurring in
June 1959. (Family note on file from Kurt Hoffman, email received by
Hackenmueller’s.)

Public historical references typically cite 1960 for the Hackenmueller
purchase (see below), so the clean way to present this on the website
is “1959–1960” unless you uncover a bill of sale or newspaper notice
that resolves the exact month/year.

The Hackenmueller Era (1960 – 1980)

Around 1959–1960, brothers Herbert, Harold, and Reinhart Hackenmueller acquired the market and officially renamed it Hackenmueller Meats, establishing what would become one of the most respected names among local butcher shop businesses in the region. Their purchase marked more than a change in ownership — it was the beginning of a family tradition built on quality meats, skilled craftsmanship, and personalized customer service that would shape the business for generations.

Under the leadership of the Hackenmueller family, the market grew from a small neighborhood meat counter into a trusted local butcher shop known for its commitment to freshness, consistency, and community values. The brothers brought decades of butchering knowledge and a hands-on approach that emphasized custom cuts, attention to detail, and building personal relationships with customers. Unlike large grocery chains, Hackenmueller Meats focused on delivering the kind of personalized experience that only a traditional local butcher shop can provide.

Over the years, the business became especially well known for its house-made specialties, including handcrafted sausages, smoked meats, marinated products, and family recipes that became staples for local families, holiday meals, cookouts, and community gatherings. Customers returned not only for the premium products, but also for the dependable service and familiar atmosphere that made the shop feel like part of the neighborhood.

As the reputation of Hackenmueller Meats continued to grow, so did its connection to the surrounding community. The shop became a place where generations of families returned year after year, creating traditions centered around quality food and trusted service. Through hard work, community involvement, and a dedication to preserving the values of a classic local butcher shop, the Hackenmueller family built a lasting legacy that customers still recognize and appreciate today.

The Lindenfelser Era (1980 – April 1, 2025)

In 1980, Gordy Lindenfelser purchased the business. He ran the market for more than 45 years, becoming a key figure in the modern identity of the shop and maintaining the standards and service that made it a destination throughout the Twin Cities.
